Building off last class

I wanted to pick up where we left off. I have finalized my blanks a bit with some hammering and moved on to laying out my design, cutting it out, filing it true and sanding it on the disc sander. I am working on two designs now. One, spoon and I am going to make something else. Maybe a shovel? There is something about a food shovel the seems appropriate.

So step one: finalizing the shape of my blank using the cross peen side and the domed side. Of course make sure you have polished all of your surfaces including your spoons stakes and hammer heads.

Step two:  In order to get the large flat end large and flat I ran the end into the rolling mill being careful not to go past the neck (the section that transitions into the handle)

Step three: After my blank was nice and flat, I measured and started sketching out my design.  I did a simple CAD layout from my measurements and printed up multiple copies so I could draw different designs on top.  Once I had my design I cut it out with scissors and traced it onto my blank.

Step four: I used a combination of the disc sander, files and the jewelers saw to refine the shape.

Step five:  Once the bowl blank was shaped I started sinking the bowl.  This is done by annealing just the bowl.  At this point a lot the final finish is done with a file and later tuned up with sandpaper.
